Lab Design
Fire and Safety Upgrades
San Francisco, California

murakami/Nelson was selected to design a 3,000 square foot Neurochemistry Research Laboratory at San Francisco General Hospital. The design included administrative offices, a general lab with 15 work stations, an animal surgery room, support equipment room, sterilizer room, cell culture room, cold box, dark room, and microscopy room. Typical lab equipment included biological fume hoods, Laminar fume hoods, incubators, centrifuges sterilizers, freezers, and various types of bench top equipment.

With renovation work involved in an 80-year-old building, design required new mechanical, HVAC, plumbing, electrical, and fire protection systems.

We were also retained to conduct a fire/life safety analysis of the total 63,000 sq. ft. building, and to prepare a report of the results. Subsequently, we prepared the upgrade documents to meet the requirements of the State Fire Marshal. New utility services were upgraded or added to serve the present and future use of the whole 2nd floor as a Neuroscience Center.
