Melrose Branch Library
Oakland, California

The Melrose Branch Library is a historically significant building that was constructed under the Carnegie Library Program in 1916. Its distinctive architectural style, as well as the quality of construction, has earned the building local landmark status.

The two-story building sits one half-story above grade and has a full basement that serves as a child care center and storage area. murakami/Nelson was commissioned to seismically strengthen the building. As part of the project, ADA issues were addressed, including the addition of an elevator and unisex toilet. The childcare area was restored to the public meeting room that was envisioned in the original design. Two storage rooms were converted into a new computer lab/classroom and conference/meeting room in addition to the mechanical and electrical systems being upgraded.

In working with the State Historic Building Code, we were able to produce a high quality design which met both preservation and seismic objectives and improved the building’s function.
