LBL Building 90
Seismic Strengthening
Berkeley, California

Building 90 on the campus of the Lawrence Berkeley National Laboratory is a four-story, 88,000 sq. ft. structural steel office building. Major components of the project included seismic strengthening of the structure, reducing stresses in the structure due to long term differential settlement, and stabilizing landslide areas adjacent to the building. As architectural design consultant, murakami/Nelson’s effort included the unique design of the exterior steel buttresses to reinforce the existing steel frame building without affecting the continued use of the building during construction.
