The John F. Kennedy Swim Center in Richmond is an existing community facility that had suffered from short three-month seasonal operation, inclement weather conditions, vandalism, and budgetary problems. murakami/Nelson was retained to evaluate, aid in programming, and design a new facility with indoor swimming, increased locker space, and office space to attract a variety of users and to expand operation of the facility for year-round usage.

murakami/Nelson has designed an attractive, aesthetically pleasing, low maintenance swim center to accommodate the expanded program: an enclosed 25-yard pool for laps, instruction and general fitness; an outdoor recreational children's pool; an enclosed landscaped courtyard with sun area; and renovated locker rooms. Through its many programs, this new facility is designed to attract a variety of users, from children to the elderly, encouraging the community to interact and care for the new center.
