Harbor Bay Landing
Shopping Center
Alameda, California

The Harbor Bay Landing Shopping Center occupies 10 acres of land and water on the San Francisco Bay. It includes a mix of shops, restaurants, service facilities, and office space. This unique all-wood shopping center provides over 100,000 square feet of retail space. Partially constructed on piers, the complex is set around an open plaza and a small boat-oriented lagoon.

The unique relationship of this project to the water is a key feature of the design. Two outdoor plazas step down to the lagoon creating a strong connection to the water's edge. The plazas and walkways are paved with warm textured materials. Outdoor furnishings, landscaping, and lighting were incorporated into the overall design to give an integrated visual language to all components of the project. Buildings are set at angles to enhance view corridors to the water and facilitate pedestrian flow through the center.

murakami/Nelson won an award for design excellence from the American Plywood Association for this project. Over the years, the project has been featured in several industry publications including Professional Builder.
