Alice Arts Center
City of Oakland
Oakland, California

murakami/Nelson designed the addition to and the renovation of this six story, 10 level, 90,000 sq. ft. structure originally built in 1927. The renovation included exterior restoration of the concrete and steel frame structure as well as seismic strengthening. All strengthening was concealed behind restored and new construction.

The lower levels of the building were developed into a performing arts center for culturally diverse ballet, theater and dance organizations. The renovation included the development of performance and rehearsal studios and administrative offices which are accessible to the handicapped. The building also has commercial storefronts and offices as well as 75 residential units on the upper floors. Rehabilitation of the main and elevator lobbies reflects the original decor and elegance of the building. In the city's first public arts project, various artists were commissioned to develop artwork to be incorporated into the fabric of the building.
